A famous French surgeon, Guy de Chauliac, was the most successful in curing the plague. He realised that there were 2 forms of plague and that he could not help victims of pneumonic plague. For victims of bubonic plague, Guy would cut open their boils and burn the wounds with a red hot iron.

Today people do not usually get so frightened of a disease. We can go to the doctor and he can give us treatment or pill which usually make us better or stop us catching the disease .
Mediaeval doctors could not help people who caught the plague. In fact some doctors were so scared that they would not treat people who were suffering from it.
They thought the disease was caused by bad air, so their solution
was to put sweet-smelling air in its place. But this only stopped you from
smelling those who were dying. It did not stop you catching the disease
yourself.
