League Match:  Larne 3 - 6  Donaghadee (At time of abandonment) (07/10/00)

"SHORT STAY AT LARNE

Donaghadee travelled to Larne last Saturday for  a Qualifying II League game, fully expecting the usual 80 minutes of robust rugby football.  In the event the referee decided that there was just too much robust play and abandoned the game after about fifty minutes with the scoreline reading 6-3 to Donaghadee.  This will probably not be relevant since the Ulster Branch will probably rule that the game will have to be replayed in its entirety.  For the record, Paul Blewitt had two successful kicks, a drop goal and a penalty to Larne's one penalty.

Donaghadee had set about this game in earnest, with well-co-ordinated rucking and mauling.  Their success at this tactic seemed to have the effect of antagonising the home players, and their response in turn annoyed the visitors.  Players from both sides then took it upon themselves to sort it out and eventually the referee decided that if they were not going to play to the laws that it would be preferable to put an end to the affair."
