I have great admiration for John Henry Newman a churchman from the 19th Century. He led a very active life in both the Anglican and Roman Catholic church creating controversy and campaigning for a higher standard of spiritual life.
I decided, a while ago to write a series of poems on the events of his. I also decided that I needed a challenge to develop my style of poetry which is normally quite short and terse. .
This is a work in progress, I have written three poems covering approximately the first thirty years of his life. I am in the process of reading his many works and researching his life. I studied Newman as part of my A Level RE syllabus. He is a curious mixture of intellectual, conservative, educator and poet (he wrote Lead Kindly Light, now a famous hymn). At present there is also a strong campaign to canonise him to appoint him a Saint. .
