Petty's Maps

The Barony of Kinelarty 1656

Back to Homepage

Petty and his team of engineers created  the the baronial and parish maps of Kinelarty  between 1654 and 1656.  All of the area in these maps was originally McCartan patrimony   which became forfeit after 1642.  In that year  Chichester and  an army of Scots invaded and took control of mid Down.  In his maps Petty recorded the townlands, their measurements, names of previous native Irish occupiers and the quality of the land. Petty's book of survey and distribution, which accompanied these maps, mentions the grantees of these lands as himself, Sir William Petty, George Rawdon and Mrs Traille. These grants had a twofold purpose:

Recipients received the lands in payment for services rendered to the crown.
To give the Crown a strong presence amongst the native Irish.

A note in Petty's survey reads:  'The inhabitants of the barony of Kinelarty are for the most part old Irish, many Scots but few English'.
