How many Tides?

Day in, day out, patient monks cause the water to gush twice daily
from the Stone’s heart on to the mill wheel, for their daily bread.
The mill destroyed by strife, the Stone lies buried in the mud;
eight hundred and fifty thousand tides ebb and flow.
A rising sun illuminates the Stone’s face to a People greatly changed,
yet captive still to the same unchanged emotions and desires.
