CareerHistory
Recent History

Henning Berg began his football career with Lillestrom in Norway before moving to Blackburn Rovers, where he was a member of the team which pipped United on the final day of the season for the Premier League Championship in 1995.

Alex Ferguson, a long time admirer of Berg (In 1988 Berg spent a week at Old Trafford on trial) made several attempts to buy him and finally in 1997 and  £5 million later, Alex Ferguson and United finally got their man.

Berg's debut for Manchester United was only two days after him signing, at home against Southampton. Berg settled into the side very quickly and played an important role in United's defence alongside either Gary Pallister or Ronny Johnsen. Berg is also an experienced international with over 50 appearances to his name, and played in the 1994 and 1998 World Cups.Strangely he has scored more goals (8) with Norway than at United (3).

Berg began the 1998-99 season unsure of his future at United but by the end of the season he had contributed to United's success on numerous occasions.Henning will be mainly remembered that season for his performances in the Champions League, his vital goal-line clearances against Inter Milan at home and away.

In the San Siro he kept Ronaldo at bay and in the December to March period, when he played the majority of his games, he was outstanding. His aerial ability, positional skill and composed style had served United well.

Unfortunately injury caused him to miss that season's finish, but he was back for the next season with the extended Champions league giving him more first team starts.
As with any defender, an error can cost a goal and Berg's mistakes at Fiorentina and home to Marseille were highlighted. In a difficult year for the United defence he found himself battling for a place against new signing Silvestre but Alex Ferguson preferred the more experienced Berg in the big European games.
