Army Aviation in Ulster by Guy Warner & Alex Boyd Army helicopters have been a familiar sight in the skies of Northern Ireland for a generation, and this new book tells their story for the first time. The story begins with a brief history of army aviation dating back to 1878, and looks in more detail at the connection between Northern Ireland and the post World War Two Army Air Corps, covering the period from 1957 to 2004. A large section of the book covers the time of the Troubles, and traces the development of the use of army aircraft at this time. The book recalls the technical and tactical changes, and many dramatic incidents are covered. As well as the dramatic, there were also many light-hearted and humorous moments, such as the one recounted on page 65. The authors have received tremendous co-operation from the Corps, as can be seen from the many photographs of aircraft in action, and by the depth of the text. The book has a foreword by HRH The Prince of Wales, Colonel-in-Chief of the Corps. Available from: Ernie Cromie, £13 inc. Postage & Packing. Please make cheques payable to Ulster Aviation Society. |
No. 230 Squadron Royal Air Force by Guy Warner. In 2004 No 230 Squadron is based at RAF Aldergrove in Northern
Ireland. This new illustrated history of the Squadron begins with its
formation in 1918, when it was formed at Felixstowe in Suffolk. The
Squadron is most famously associated with the Short Sunderland Flying
Boat, and was the first squadron operational on this type of aircraft.
No 230 Squadron has seen active service across the globe, and the association
with flying boats continued until 1957 when the Squadron was disbanded.
It was reformed again in 1958, and eventually made the transition to
helicopters. Aldergrove has been its home for the last eleven years,
flying the Puma HC1 helicopter in support of the security forces. As
well as its history, the book also features numerous people who have
served with the Squadron over the years. Available from: Ernie Cromie, £17 inc. Postage & Packing. Please make cheques payable to Ulster Aviation Society. |

No.72 Squadron Official History In 2002, No.72 Squadron, Royal Air Force celebrated its 85th birthday. Sadly, 2002 also saw the disbandment of the squadron. It is very much to be hoped that this will be only a temporary condition and that the Squadron will soon be re-formed . It served the people of Northern Ireland from 1969 - 2002, a record, no other squadron having been associated with the Province longer. Following 12 years of detachments to Aldergrove, 72 Squadron was based there for almost 21 years - a total of nearly 33 years in the Province. |
