At the start of the 20th Century ship building reached an all time high. Ships were being made larger and faster than ever before. The most luxurious one so far was built in 1907 - The 'Lusitania'. At this time Bruce Ismay Chairman of the White Star Line which was a British Firm had a vision. He wanted to create a ship that would beat the Lusitania and would therefore bring the White Star Line ahead in the race for the greatest Atlantic steamers. He wanted to build three ships all 50% larger than the Lusitania and far more luxurious.
1907 - Bruce Ismay Discussed the proposal to build three large steamers with Lord James Pirrie who had a partnership with Harland & Wolf. (A large ship building firm in Eastern Belfast, Northern Ireland and still around today) Lord Pirarrie thought that it was a great idea. So the plans where laid to build the three ships. Those plans would become the Britannic, The Olympic and the Titanic.
