The Trangia Stove Range. Trangia stoves originate in Sweeden, they all share basically the same features, varing only in size and the details of what utensils are included :- The basic set up is 2 cooking pots, 1 fry pan/plate, 1 burner, 1 simmer ring, 1 pan grip. 2 piece wind shield. options :- kettle, non stick coating on some or all of the pans. Gas conevrter to run from a propane tank. The particular version I own is the 27 K sized for two people, with the kettle but no non-stick items, I would, however, like to replace the fry pan with a non-stick version. The stoves are an ingenious design, manufactured from aluminium and stacking to gether when not in use to form a unit that looks not unlke a mixing bowl with a lid. Initially trangia stoves look quite large in comparison to other backpacking stoves, but when you take into account that all your cookware is included the dimensons are really quite modest. All versions run on methylated spirits (often called denatured or wood alcohol) - in a pinch almost any other high grade spirit will serve. Alcohol produces less energy than paraffin, gas or petrol when burned and consequently the Trangia stoves are quite slow in use, the upside of this is that the fuel is less exposive and hence safer to carry than other varieties, in fact it can legally be carried on board civilian aircraft, a factor which led to my choosing the Trangia as my stove of choice some 12 years ago. In those 12 years I've never had a single problem with it (bar losing the burner bag), that stems from the fact that there is practically nothing to go wrong; pour in the fuel and light with a match, turn the holes on the windshield into wind ....... and that's it ! No priming, no moving parts, no nothing, to extinguish simply close the cover on the simmer ring all the way. Maintainance consists of keeping clean and clearing out the holes in the burner with a pin about once a year. I can highly recommend the Trangia to anyone as a backpacking or survival stove, using one myself is the highest recommendaton I can give. Pros:- All in one design. No maintainance. Safe fuel type. Cons:- Bulky. Slow. Available worldwide.
