MEDICAL Kids should have their own "med kit" which is mostly band-aids. If they can't see the scratch they won't notice it. GROUP BAG (separate bag for medications) Protech, aspirin, measurer, flash light (small 1-AAA cell type, white), soap, burn ointment, towelettes, sugar packets for stop gap measure for diabetics, if they are suffering from an over dose of insulin, you will help them, if it is from lack of insulin, you won't make them that much worse! Ace wraps, non-sterile gauzes can be used on top of sterile gauzes, triangle bandages, KLING 2" and 3" 10 yard. Band aids, various, camo compress 4x7 dressing 6510-159-4883 $0.50-$2.00, large 11 3/4 FSN 6510-201-7425(V-10) dressing, sponges 4x4 12 ply, belt (for various functions of tie-down/hold), bactine, baby kit, blood pressure kit, cards, note pad and pencils, Q-tips, tongue depressors (make nice finger splints), neck brace (if you know how to use it). medic badge (not a garish red and white-red on olive drab, noticable but not blatant), sewing kit for clothes. BUTT PACK small group 2-5 2x3 pads, 10-4x4, 10-3x3, triangular bandage (white or olive drab) 2- compresses, guaze 2"x 10yrds & 4" x 10 yards, Iodine swabs, hypoallergenic adhesive tapes (don't compound your problems), pads 10-1 1/2x2, 5- butterfly closures, 10-25 1" bandaids. SAFETY pins(very handy for lots of stuff, Betadine squeeze bottle, NOTE: EVERYTHING should be in heavy duty zip-lock style bags, 10 - prep pads, 3 pair examing gloves. JUMP KIT, Personal. Cold pack, heat pack, medicines, alcohol, 25-pads, 100-bandaids, scissors, scalpels, tweezers, flashligh, thermometer (do not let it freeze!!), mosquito stick, vaseline, otoscope, Ace bandages, safety pins, sugar packet. Make a medical vest!!! Concept: You are ALONE with no resources other then yourself. Keep minor injuries MINOR! Fear and panic will increase shock, raise pulse = more blood loss! Remain calm, pain is good, it tells you that you are alive & KEEPS YOU AWAKE! 1.Check for bleeding, stop bleeding with direct pressure. Take your pulse, concentrate on the number of beats to lower it. If blood is spurting, that indicates an artery, maintain pressure for at least 15 minutes. Oozing = vein maintain for at least 5 minutes. In shock, pulse is fast and weak, it stops or slows blood to the extremities. Elevate the feet, stay warm and STAY AWAKE! Take a deep breath to check for sucking chest wound. Have a vaseline covered gauze in your med-pack (it's airtight at those pressures with a pressure dressing) or something like plastic (your MRE bag) and tape to seal chest wound. Check your limbs, if you THINK you have a fracture SPLINT IT! Do not remove your boot UNLESS it is cutting off circulation. Your foot will swell up and you won't get it back in and then you won't be able to walk. Also the boot makes a good wrap. Check your mental status. Do NOT surrender to front line troops, they will kill you. Surrender to somebody in a dress uniform and make them think that you important, valuable and usefull. Triangular bandage and tape belong in all med-packs. On abdominal wounds do NOT push the guts back in, as you will likely kink the bowel leading to blockage, necrosis, and other BAD complications. Do not take anything by mouth to prevent fluids flowing through wound. If over 30 minutes to help, keep the dressing wet so that the guts do not dry out. Belly wounds need wire sutures due to the great mechanical stress on them(wire for strength and plastic coating to increase surface area so that suture doesn't cut through skin under stress). Always make the suture through undamaged skin far enough away from the wound so that what you are sewing into won't come apart under stress. If you have no anesthesia and no antibiotics you need to know herbal helps. Make personal, group, and base medical kits. If aspirin smells like vinager, it has gone bad and toxic. Vitamin C is good as is garlic. AGAIN, treat minor wounds before they become major! Every medical kit should have SALT, ALCOHOL, and HYDROGEN PEROXIDE Salt 4 teaspoons/quart of water for a saline solution, boil water, add salt and let cool. Alcohol for disinfecting and emergency fire starter. Hydrogen peroxide is H2O2 and will release oxygen. Important in puncture wounds since tetnus is anaerobic and the O2 will help kill it. Take your cotton swab, dip in H2O2 and insert into puncture type wounds. Stock glass syringes, they can be boiled sterile again, plastic can't. Fishline (monofilament) CAN be used as suture material. Try to sterilize but remember its better to treat an infected wound than to bury a blood loss case. Sewing needles that are flattened in cross section will cause less damage than round ones. If the wound is small use butterfly sutures made from your tape. Steri-strips are nice to have as well as tracheotomy tubes. Baking soda is useful for gargle, toothpowder, upset stomach, rash, insect bites. acid injuries, etc. Suturing = interrupted and un-interrupted. Interrupted is many small knots and is better since if one loop or know breaks the whole works isn't lost. Un-interrupted is one long set of loops and if one part breaks the whole thing is lost. Suture at least 1/4" either side of wound so that suture goes through healthy strong skin. Phosphorus wounds. Phosphorus needs oxygen to burn. It will just keep burning and follow the line of gravity or least resistance. It will burn right through somebody and kill them nice and slow and painfull! Reduce the oxygen at the wound, water emersion is MUCH better than air and removes heat. Phosphorous will glow in the dark, making it easy to see. Use whatever tool you need to get remove it from wound. It is a metal and can be grasped by plier type tools. Snake bites. Pack in ice or cold pack, slow the pulse, tie a constrictor to slow but not stop the artery but to stop vein. "X" shaped cut 1/2" long and 1/4" deep wherever the toxin is. If you see a red streak going toward the body cut at the top of the streak. Most snake bites are not deadly but will cause great discomfort, weakened condition, and necrosis of flesh at main point of concentration so be prepared for a large wound to develope. What IF's Scenario #1 - best case, you are aid station close to hospital and doctors. #2 -worst case, you are IT, period, docs and hospital far away or blown up. Triage - check body, take respiration and pulse rate and strength. Cut away dressing, do not untie. Cut away clothes. You need sterile water and a clean area. Get feedback from patient for info and to evaluate mental functioning. Old army compresses are only so-so, get NEW compresses. No leg splint? pad between legs and splint to other leg, at the top, above the knee, above the break, and below the break. With rigid splint on broken side, to on good side. For bleeding use direct pressure, elevation, and indirect pressure. 1/4" plexiglass makes a good splint. Always tie off away from the wound & on a bone. On the head do NOT tie on the back of neck, on artery, or windpipe. Pres fingernails or toes nails and release to note color changes (adequacy of blood to that limb). Monitor blood pressure. Make a record of injuries, treatment, time, vital signs, who you are, supplies used, etc. Keep patient clean for infection and moral purposes. Make a TRAINING KIT from broken, soiled, used medical supplies. Make a SUPPLY KIT for restocking your personal and group kit.
